Movie Review of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit

For the record, there were four Tom Clancy movie adaptations featuring Jack Ryan but this is the first movie that wasn't written by the creator. This movie shows how Jack Ryan started in the Agency. Just like The Bourne Legacy movie, it is an interpretation or expansion of the Jack Ryan franchise.

What makes Jack Ryan fascinating that he is no field agent. He's an analyst with a background as a marine. Jack Ryan is no secret agent supreme like 007. He's deep involvement in his escapades was circumstantial. It is also the first time that Jack Ryan was used as a title character. No Clancy novel ever used a character name as a title.

But the dangers Jack Ryan faces can be real in the world of espionage. This shows the human limitations of Jack Ryan in these situations. The last Jack Ryan movie was The Sum Of All Fears with Ben Affleck as Ryan. It was intended as a prequel but it never had a follow up after it.

Chris Pine's performance as Ryan was OK but I cannot help but still see him as Captain Kirk. Hopefully, this will start a new era for Jack Ryan because there are still more books about him that is yet to be adapted into a movie. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is released and distributed by United International Pictures and locally through Solar Entertainment Corp.
