Lego Batman Movie review

Since the Lego Movie, we are now re-oriented with stop-motion animation using Lego blocks, pieces and mini-figures. Unlike clay or puppetry, it is more complex because you need to be imaginative and gives more knowledge of each Lego piece design. You think it’s easy to create places or things from Lego blocks? The production people behind the Lego Movie are the real life master builders.

Among the main characters of Lego Movie, the Lego Batman is the only licensed character in focus of all the licensed merchandise Lego accumulated. Voiced by Will Arnett, he gave a new identity of Batman in the Lego Movie and now, he has his own title movie.

Will Arnett’s voice for the Lego Batman is not far off from the animation favorite Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman in the Warner Bros animation, Batman The Animated Series, Batman and Robin, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, and some Warner Direct-To-Video that features Batman but he also made a cinema debut of the character with Batman: Mask of The Phantasm.

Will Arnett’s Lego Batman is more like a parody of not just the Tim Burton Batman which colors he shows in Lego Batman but the parody of all Batman incarnations whether in live action or illustrated. Arnett may not surpassed Conroy in voicing Batman but he did well since he can make a voice of Bruce Wayne and Batman differently like Conroy does in animation. Will Arnett may be the second best Batman actor. Another revelation in voice acting was Zack Galifianakis who voiced Joker in this movie. He was not far off from Mark Hamill's voice acting of the character with Kevin Conroy.

The Lego Batman Movie is also an expansion of Lego Batman but it is not clear if this takes place before or after the Lego Movie because it only focused on Batman. As for the story, it is simple because you only need to make a good laugh from the movie and enjoy. You need not to pay attention to the Batman punchlines. Even if you are not a comic book fan, you can still get the point.  The movie needs not to be translated to Tagalog for the local masses to watch because even a child can watch and the movie is Rated PG locally.

In comparison to the DC Lego movies which are direct-to-video and the Lego Batman Movie, I find the Lego Batman Movie better since they used real Lego pieces. I still like Lego Movie better but it is a good expansion of the Lego Universe. I am looking forward for Lego Ninjago Movie soon it is also a good merchandise in Lego.

I only watched the movie in regular 2D cinema but it is already good even without 3D and you don't have to spend more for 3D/IMAX/4D just to watch it. The Lego Batman movie opens February 8 in Philippine cinemas. For more quality and critical movie reviews, follow this blog and like L.E.N.S. blogs on Facebook.
