Star Trek: Into Darkness movie review

Star Trek is already a pioneer in science fiction. It is the longest running science fiction franchise in history. Star Trek was created by the late Gene Roddenberry in 1966 as a series known today as The Original Series because it spawned five more series and twelve movies including this new one.

The series was considered an icon in pop culture because it developed a fan base community called Trekkies or Trekkers. Science fiction meant that it is a possible reality to happen. Most don't realize that Star Trek inspired many innovations that we enjoy today like mobile phones which was inspired by Star Trek handheld communicators. There are legitimate researchers and scientists the possibility of Trek technology is theoretical but can be proven.

Star Trek also had serious issues in their stories. The principles of the fictional Starfleet tackles ethical scenarios which can be applied in daily living. The cult phenomenon of Star Trek is only appreciated by the Trekky/Trekkers which is a minority in society. The franchise didn't get much anticipation from the general audience except for the Trekkkies/Trekkers. In the Philippines alone, most are not into science fiction because it never got much publicity. The local TV and movie industry never created anything sci-fi. There are a few to mention but it didn't build a popularity.

Which is the reason why is there a need to reintroduce Star Trek to the newer audience. The remaking seem to be a good idea since two of the original cast were already deceased. The reboot seemed to be a good idea but when the first reboot movie was released it got divided criticism among Trekkies/Trekkers about its authenticity to The Original Series.

The reboot brought mixed reactions among its fans. Most purists never like the idea. But it brought in new fans. As a trekkie, this movie never disappointed me. If any purist trekkie were not convinced in the last movie, this sequel will probably redeem itself. I still didn't get why it was titled Into Darkness. It was unusual in any Star Trek movie. The previous ones for example was Nemesis or Insurrection. Probably, I will get it when I get the chance to watch it again.

I also like what they did with the 3D. There are some scenes that seems like coming right out of the screen. Probably because I got to see it in IMAX. JJ Abrams himself said that he was not fond of 3D until this movie was finished. Star Trek: Into Darkness was his first movie done in 3D. Showing in Philippine cinemas starting May 15, Star Trek: Into Darkness is released and distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment Corporation.

Screening for media was held at IMAX theatre of SM Mall Of Asia.
