Movie Review: Disney's Frozen

Story: A new Disney tale based on The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen.

Review: I first read the story Snow Queen during my childhood. Just like any tale of Hans Christian Andersen, the story was dark. When I first read the material of Disney's Frozen, it reminded me of the Snow Queen. Then, I was also told that it was based on Andersen's story.

It is not the first time Disney Studios made a newer version of an Andersen tale. The Little Mermaid was also Andersen's. Because the Mermaid story was so tragic, Disney Studios made it a little lighter with a happy ending.

As for Disney's Frozen, it took a different level for the Snow Queen story. Unlike the original, you can't help but feel sorry for Elsa, the Snow Queen in the story.  The characters were also changed to support the story.

Instead of childhood friends as the protagonist of the original story, they were replaced by Elsa's sister, Anna and mountain man Kristoff. For the voice actors, let's start with Anna. Voiced by Kristen Bell. It was a revelation for me to find out that she is also a singer. I first saw her in Heroes, where she played Elle. Her personality was fit for the role of Anna.

For Idina Menzel who played Anna sister, Elsa, she was also a revelation. I never thought that a Broadway actress of her stature would be doing voice over. Despite her non-regular appearances in Glee, she proved that voicing in an animation is not a hindrance for her credentials. She gave a fierce song number in "Let It Go."

The men of Frozen are just given supporting status. Kristoff was played by Jonathan Groff and Hans by Santino Fontana who also has non-regular appearances in Glee. Josh Gad is the source of comic relief as the character Olaf the Snowman.

To wrap this review up, this movie will worth your money. It's one movie for the whole family to enjoy. Watch out for the cameo appearance of Tangled's Ranpunzel and Flynn Ryder in one of Anna's songs. Disney's Frozen is released and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Philippines.
