CHiPs movie review
In my childhood, CHiPs is one of my favorite shows. The title was
taken from California Highway Patrol or CHP and added “i” to make it appealing
and easy to remember. So far, it was the only cop show that focused on the
highway patrol.
There is also diversity of the main characters. In the TV
series, it casts Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox. One is Latin American and one
is white. The series ran for six seasons
and back then it was cool. It was followed up by TV movie CHiPs ’99 which was
their reunion production.
The series is wholesome because the audience are intended to
be family oriented because of the TV medium. The movie went beyond that. The
audience are now limited adults because the humor is more adult oriented and it
has nudity. But unlike the series, there is now inclusivity since there are
female patrol officers in CHP. Unfortunately, Only Jon and Ponch are the only
characters from the TV series that made debut in the cinemas.
As for the story, it is more action packed than the series
and it also explored an origin story. I am glad this movie followed after
other TV series turned movies like Starsky and Hutch, Charlie’s Angels and 21
Jump Street. I am looking forward for a sequel to this.
