Star Wars The Force Awakens movie review

Movie reviewer's note: Guaranteed  no spoilers. This is just a reaction of the movie.

The Lucasfilm logo appeared on the screen, followed by the thunderous sound of John Williams' theme while the Star Wars title zooms into view then scrolls Episode VII. Each time with this adds jubilation from the fans. This is how fans anticipated the biggest movie to end the year 2015.

I never thought I'd see this day would come. Years after Episode VI, some of the old cast members reunited with new actors that introduced new characters in a galaxy far, far away. Of course it can't be done doing were it was left off because the cast are years older for their characters.

Star Wars creator George Lucas accepted the expanded universe of Star Wars that got published as books, graphic novels, cartoons and video games as part of the canon which is I wonder which part the published materials can we squeeze this movie since a lot has happened.

Here are some of the reactions I wish to convey. The First Order. As what they appear to look like, they are remnants of the fallen Empire because they still have Stormtroopers, TIE Fighters and more. It also has the only trooper with a name. Captain Phasma. But I felt that her character is a waste. I expected much more of Phasma.

For the Resistance Forces, the most highlighted character was Poe Dameron was played by Oscar Isaac and is best known for unusual roles but being in Star Wars as the ace pilot of the resistance is quite impressive and he is a great actor. For Rey, she is a good addition of one of the strong female roles in the Star Wars universe following in the footsteps of Leia and Amidala. Star Wars is very inclusive with the characters. Rey is played by Daisy Ridley.

Seeing old characters like Han Solo, Leia Organa and Chewbacca also add awe to the audiences. Overall, it has a feeling of Episode IV all over again which is why I believe JJ Abrams did a good job getting the franchise back to the big screen again.

Watching it in IMAX in SM Meganall with 3D and it is probably the first Star Wars movie shown in IMAX. cinema. It is not dominantly shot for IMAX but it didn't expand the screen in a bad way. It would be great if it was shot in HFR IMAX camera. But there are 3D images that makes the debris thrown at you. For all it's worth, it is the best movie to watch before the Film Fest starts. Rest assured, it may still be seen in this cinema format even during the festival and it's worth to spend it there.

What I like about Star Wars that there is no definite main character to focus. You cannot focus on one character alone. There are many stories that can be developed from them. Disney did well in buying the franchise and didn't ruin it.

Star Wars The Force Awakens opens in Philippines December 17, 2015. The Philippine premiere was held in IMAX cinema at SM Megamall. For more movie reviews, follow this blog and like L.E.N.S. blogs on Facebook.

  1. Saw it in IMAX MOA expecting a 15/70 format of the Jakku Escape as promised but got disappointed, what they've got is just an expanded 1.89:1 aspect ratio instead of the traditional 1.43:1 ratio of 70mm IMAX. Saw it again in IMAX Megamall and it delivered well. Saw it also twice in 2D.
