Saving Sally movie review
Saving Sally
is a typical story of a boy meets girl but with a twist. It combines both live
action and animation. Marty is an aspiring comic book artist and Sally is an
inventor of unusual stuff that either you don’t need or an epic fail.
Marty is an
ultimate example of the friend zoned which I totally relate. Who doesn’t
experience falling in love with their best friend? Like Marty, I also fell in
love with my high school girl best friend. It is a bittersweet feeling.
This will
test how your friendship can endure. Would you sacrifice friendship and gain a
deeper relationship? What if the relationship fails and there is no chance of
getting the friendship back because it’s awkward.
Marty’s
description of monsters is not literal but can be figurative. That is why the
animation is relevant. It makes a thin line between fantasy and reality. There
are monsters in all forms that it is something to think about.
The animation
is just one example on how good the Filipinos are in the field. Our animators
are already being outsourced by American studios for projects which is why we
can list names of Pinoys who are big in animation abroad.
The story
also makes a hero out of a geeky guy. It is truly an underdog story that most
can relate. It is nice to have an underdog for a hero. It shows the struggle
and in this case, the struggle to win the girl he loves. Although this is
nothing new because Revenge Of The Nerds and The Big Bang Theory did it ahead.
Even though
it is animated, it does not mean it is for kids to watch. There are still some adult words and swearing in some dialogues. There are some
dialogues that only a geeky person can relate. For example, the comic book
publisher said that Transformers The Movie (The animated one.) made him cry. Because there was a movie before
Michael Bay’s live action movie that is animated in 1985.
The movie
also shows Easter Eggs for only a geeky person can reference. You could say its
hidden symbols for us in the Secret Society of Geeks or specifically, in
Komikon. The movie showcases comic art as well as animation. Saving Sally is surely for specific audience but it is surely one
movie that made a mark in history of Philippine cinema. I only wish there will
be frequent at least one frequent animated movie every year even if it’s not in
the Metro Manila Film Festival.
The casting is good. Enzo Marcos did his role Marty well. He surely made us geeks proud. Rhiann e Ramos is also ideal for the role Sally. She is tough and has limitations just the same. It also good to have Kuya Bodjie Pascua as part of the cast. It made the movie nostalgic to see him. For more movie reviews, follow this blog and like L.E.N.S. blogs on Facebook.
