Interstellar movie review
Story: Earth is now a dying planet. Food resources are now limited to none. As the reserves and the last of the crops depleting fast, a band of brave explorers pushed their boundaries in space to look for a suitable planet.
Review: Not since Star Trek and other similar sci-fi movies that shows realities and the possibilities in the future. Interstellar didn't show which timeline it's happening but it seems it's already happening in the present.
As for the depletion of Earth's food resources, it is a morbid scenario because it may cause our humanity. It may cause the fall of civilization and we may end up to worry about ourselves since your neighbors are potential threats. If this happens, the human race might as well be extinct.
The sci-fi reference in the movie are based on real research of notable scientists. From what I know and watched from watching educational shows, we can only achieve interstellar travel but not like Star Trek. With our immediate technology, I can only say travelling slowly on a manned craft or a space station that can go mobile unlike the ISS.
The movie trailer and one of the posters revealed the station travels through a wormhole. Scientists can verify the existence of wormholes but cannot explain yet how predict it when it opens. It seems like the scientists in Interstellar are aware of the wormhole which means the wormhole they used is very stable.
Even if you are not a sci-fi buff/Trekkie like me, you will be oriented how a wormhole works. The movie not just tells something deep about the universe but it also has metaphysical concepts which some theosophical minded will appreciate.
Science fiction is a movie genre most Filipinos are not aware of. We are used to watching drama, romance, comedies and horror because we just wanted to be entertained. But thanks to independent film making, it developed audiences that needs to be stimulated intellectually just like this movie which is Chris Nolan is targeting since Inception. Interstellar may get these audience to watch quality movies.
Coming from the material at SM Cinemas and confirmed by Warner Bros. Philippines, the movie is using the 70mm cameras which is suited for an IMAX movie. SM Cinemas had to bring out the non-digital camera for the viewing. If you are familiar with old film cameras, that is a 35mm film and 70mm brings a more crisp image good for IMAX audiences.
I viewed Interstellar last November 3 at SM IMAX in Mall Of Asia. For more quality reviews and geek perspectives, follow this blog or like L.E.N.S. blogs on Facebook.
