Exodus: Gods And Kings movie review

We all know the story of Moses and most movie buffs including me have seen Charlton Heston's portrayal of the biblical patriarch. Exodus is part of the Torah or The Book of Law according to the Jews. It is also debatable if this account of the Bible exists since there is no historical record even to the Egyptian hieroglyphs. The reason was the Hebrews were telling these stories from word of mouth. It was only after their return to Jerusalem that they had a written account which is not considered a historical reference. The only historical reference mentioned was Ramses. But Christians took it by faith that these events happened.

It was unusual that Ridley Scott is doing the Mosaic account since we know him as the icon who brought as the sci-fi thriller Alien anthology. It is no surprise that Sigourney Weaver is part of the cast playing the role as the wife of the Pharaoh. What's surprising was that Christian Bale is playing the role of the Hebrew patriarch since he is known as Chris Nolan's Batman.

Here's how I see Exodus. Unlike the Biblical test and the Heston version, some of the plagues that was shown has more logical reason why it occurred not like it just happened. I like how Moses seen as part of the Egyptian dynasty since he is really a prince of Egypt and was very close to his brother Ramses who is next in line as Pharaoh.

Ridley Scott also used Deus Ex Machina in this story. Deus Ex Machina is Latin for "God in a Machine". It is not new to Greek myths. It simply means that a superior being is instrumental or a savior of the lesser beings which is our case, us human beings. Most modern movie and TV story tellers dismisses Deus Ex Machina for reasons that it degrades the human spirit. But to Inspirational Christian movies, they always used this which is why Rotten Tomatoes always give low ratings to Christian produced movies.

To understand the concept of Deus Ex Machina, the best example I can give is the movie Independence Day where a computer virus was instrumental in defeating the alien invaders. Most Christians in general don't know why Moses is significant to the whole Christian faith regardless of which denomination or tradition they belong. The Exodus have foreshadowing insights that mirrors Jesus Christ.

The young Jesus fled to Egypt like Moses did when he fled to Midian to escape being captured or killed. Moses and Jesus were survivors of infanticide. The Passover lamb is the description given for Jesus.

Regardless of what faith you belong to, this is a good epic. Ridley Scott did a good movie out of a biblical story. I even joke that I might see xenomorphs as Egyptian gods, the burning bush is actually a bat signal and the plague of bats is mistaken for locusts.
