300: Rise Of An Empire movie review

The story pits the Greek general Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces, ruled by the mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and led by Artemisia, the vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

Although the story of the brave 300 led by Leonidas is considered like a myth, it has historical significance. It is a historical fact that the Persians in the reign of Xerxes did invade the Mediterranean including Greece and Leonidas led the 300 Spartans in the battle of Thermopylae. Just like in history, there are two sides of the same coin. In the Bible, another image of Xerxes was described. For the Israelites, they were secured in his rule because he married Esther.

Review: When the first movie came out, it pioneered a different kind of storytelling that only happened in the graphic novel where it all adapted. Thanks to the genius of graphic novelist Frank Miller. Frank Miller applied the same sequencing of events similar to Sin City. There are scenes that took place before, during and after the events of the first 300 movie.

Just like the first movie, there are more characters that will be unforgettable. In the first movie, the brave 300 led by Leonidas and Xerxes are considered unforgettable because of how they were imagined to look like.

Besides Xerxes, the movie introduced new character that is just as kick ass and she's a woman. Artemisia was really a commander of the Persian navy during Xerxes' reign and she is really Greek-born. Eva Green was the right person to play the part because she has this tough-as-nails attitude.

Surviving characters were also played by the original actors in this movie. I still like how it was so detailed to the graphic novel. Each frame can be used like a poster art. I enjoyed watching this movie and I am expecting fans will cosplay Spartans and Artemisia in the future.

300: Rise Of An Empire is now showing in Philippine cinemas. I suggest you watch in 3D to enjoy the experience. For more movie updates, movie reviews and interviews; visit and like LENS blogs on Facebook.
