Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children movie review
Movie reviewer’s note: This review is not endorsed by the
local movie distributor. It is reviewed without the influence of the publicist.
I spent to watch this movie on the first day. What I am about to say is not
sugar coated to compliment the movie but to be critical.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is an adaptation
of a young adult book series of the same name written by American author Ransom
Riggs for Quirk Books. My review will be based on a movie patron’s perspective
and not as a reader even though I haven’t read it. It will also be good because
it may not compliment the movie like any other adaptation.
First, the story. It gave a good start to introduce the
origin and the characters. But it can also be dragging or boring until the
action sequences. Even though it is for young adults, it can be also classified
as horror literature.
Speaking of horror, some creatures here are based on urban
legend. Like the floating girl and the slender man. Miss Peregrine is played by
Eva Green and she did very well to act matronly and she still looks hot
whatever role she plays.
The peculiarity of the children is also compared to being
mutants. But it also has mystical elements like other creatures like the Wights
and the manipulation of time which makes it unique. Tim Burton is also the best
choice to make this literary world come to life.
20th Century Fox bought many titles to life like
Percy Jackson and The Chronicles of Narnia. But after adapting these books to
life, they are discontinued because they took long to follow up with a sequel
that ended up the teen or child actors to outgrow their characters. Perhaps, it
can only work with The Maze Runner which I hope it will continue as well.
So far, this is the only good movie this week because it
also opened with Sausage Party (see review here). For more quality movie
